"Though we may say it, they won’t ever really be granted the power to bring revolution to the world. Because they have had all hope taken away from them."
The biggest difference between Utena and the Council? Hope. They’re all a bunch of lost kids, but the council approach their lives with the jaded view of an adult, whereas Utena is still a child. She believes. This, I think, at least loosely ties in with my idea of Utena’s victory in the duels being related to her convictions and strength of heart being greater than her opponents.
Because even though it is made obvious that she was always meant to win them, because it’s been set up like that, I stand by what I talked about in my episode 7 liveblog when I mentioned the paralells between Utena and Juri.
I think Juri’s the closest to it, in terms of how they live. But all the council could just have easily been Utena, they could have been that child full of hope, the duels could have been made for them. But they lost what made them strong, lost their hope. Any act of them regaining it, or Utena losing hers would, I believe throw off the balance set by End of the World for these duels.
